AI to Hybrid: Hot cloud computing trends in 2024

Enterprises worldwide are embracing cloud computing as this is more efficient, reliable, agile, and secure than on-premises systems. Two-thirds of enterprises are running their infrastructure on cloud and this number is growing rapidly. Gartner predicted the worldwide public-cloud spending to be $600 billion in 2023. We will see these cloud-related numbers going only north in years to come. If you are already using cloud services or planning to move to cloud, it’d be better to understand what’s happening in this space. To help you get a snapshot of what’s cooking in the clouds, we have curated some hot cloud computing trends to look for in 2024.

Be on the edge with Edge computing

For the uninitiated, let me quickly brief the term edge computing. Edge is the source where data is generated in your organization. For example, a manufacturing facility that has sensors collecting machine data. Suppose your edge is in a remote location or inhospitable environments. Sending data to the central data center or the cloud, processing the data, and accessing real-time insights is challenging. Edge computing enables you to compute the data at the source itself so that you can access real-time insights.

Gartner predicted that 75% of enterprise data will be produced and processed at the edge by 2025. The reason for this great shift to edge computing is its advantages. Edge computing addresses three key network challenges – latency, congestion, and bandwidth. You can extract value from your enterprise data without having to transfer the data to the public cloud or data center. By processing data at the source itself, edge computing reduces latency and network congestion. This will optimize network bandwidth and boosts performance.

Hardware availability for edge computing was seen as a challenge. However, the edge computing devices market is rapidly growing. Studies report that the number of edge devices will reach 7.8 billion by 2030 from 2.7 billion in 2020. The growth in adoption and hardware availability brings edge computing into the list of cloud computing trends for 2024.

Watch your cloud security

Cyber security is going to be a key priority for enterprises in their cloud adoption journey. The cloud security market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 24.4% to reach $123 billion by 2032. A PwC report found that cloud attacks are significantly increasing year over year. However, companies that show maturity in cyber security see a lower number of incidents.

In 2024, you will need to invest in cloud security measures as the number of incidents is increasing significantly. The catch here is, although you would be a victim in case of a cloud attack, you would also be at the receiving end of penalties from regulatory bodies like GDPR. Because data privacy is paramount.

AI meets the cloud

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see artificial intelligence in the cloud computing trends for 2024. Because AI is everywhere on the earth and above. AI in cloud computing leads to more efficient, strategic, and insight-driven businesses while increasing flexibility and cost savings. You can automate cloud operations and improve data management using machine learning algorithms. Studies reported that almost half of businesses using cloud are planning to use AI/ML technology in public-cloud.

AI-as-a-service is revolutionizing the way businesses use tools, and the integration of AI into IT infrastructure ensures seamless workloads and automation, with some experts foreseeing increased reliance on AI for monitoring and managing cloud instances. AI also improves data management and data analysis, providing real-time insights, enhancing marketing, customer service, and supply chain data management.

Multi-cloud & hybrid cloud

Multi-cloud refers to the strategy of using multiple cloud service providers simultaneously, often for different workloads or applications. This approach enhances flexibility, resilience, and vendor diversity. Hybrid cloud, on the other hand, combines both public and private cloud environments, providing a seamless integration of on-premises infrastructure with cloud resources. In 2024, multi and hybrid clouds see a more adoption. According to a Flexera study, 72 percent of enterprises are taking the hybrid cloud route.

Multicloud ensures redundancy, reducing the risk of service interruptions, and allows businesses to tailor their cloud solutions to specific requirements, optimizing costs. Hybrid cloud enables a seamless transition to cloud services while maintaining control over critical data and applications, supporting compliance needs. Both approaches enhance agility and scalability, empowering businesses to respond to market demands with greater speed and efficiency. In a world of evolving technology and business needs, multicloud and hybrid cloud strategies are invaluable tools for staying competitive and resilient in the digital era.

Stay focused with serverless computing

Serverless doesn’t mean no servers. It means you don’t need to handle IT infrastructure. There are many leading serverless platforms available in the market. For example, Azure Functions, AWS Lambda, and Google Cloud Functions, etc. Your developers can focus on developing applications and your cloud provider will take care of infrastructure management, OS updates, security patches, capacity planning, etc.

Serverless computing is gaining momentum as it allows enterprises to pay on a pay-as-you-go basis, which is a cost-effective approach. This technology also improves scalability, reliability, and time-to-market. Serverless platforms are expanding the range of programming languages and runtimes supported. This allows developers to choose the language and framework that best suited their application, making serverless more versatile. The global serverless computing market is expected to reach $28 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 20.8%. Industries such as telecommunication, BFSI, retail, and manufacturing are using serverless computing widely.

Integrating 5G with clouds for faster operations

By 2025, 5G networks will cover one-third of the global population. The integration of 5G technology complements cloud computing in 2024. If your enterprise is running applications that require real-time insights or require to transfer massive amounts of data to the cloud, 5G integration has the answers for all your challenges. 5G offers ultra-low latency which is crucial to real-time communication. With 5G, cloud-based applications can respond more quickly, making it possible to deploy services that require instant feedback, such as autonomous vehicles, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). 5G technology is also ideal for Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication, proving seamless connectivity and real-time data processing.

Green clouds

If you care for the environment and want to promote sustainability in your business operations, cloud computing can be your chance. Leading cloud providers like Amazon and Microsoft made net-zero commitments. These companies are going to use 100 percent renewable energy in their operations to reduce their carbon footprint. This push for greener and eco-friendly cloud services will only get stronger in 2024.
